Oakwood Shores Receives Bruce Abrams Good Neighbor Award

Chicago, Ill. (May 27, 2008) - Oakwood Shores, a mixed-income community made up of 6- and 9-flat buildings, townhomes, rowhouses and single-family homes on a site former Chicago Housing Authority development, has been awarded the 2008 Bruce Abrams Award by the Chicago Association of REALTORS at the annual Good Neighbor Awards event at the Palmer House Hilton on May 21st.

According to the group’s website, the Good Neighbor Awards showcase groundbreaking development in the Chicago area, and recognize properties that offer unique amenities and bonus facilities, often strengthening community pride.

The Bruce Abrams Good Neighbor Award is the highest honor bestowed by the CAR to one recipient each year for exceptional work.  The award has been given for salvaging historical properties, rescuing architecturally significant buildings and tackling stigmatized properties.

Oakwood Shores marks a turning point in public housing in Chicago, creating a new mixed-income community that includes low-income, affordable, and market-rate housing units – each indistinguishable from the others – in a new neighborhood with residential and commercial uses that was not present before.  The project is also the recent recipient of a Charter Award by the Congress for the New Urbanism.
